UAE Cabin Baggage Guide 2026: Emirates, Etihad, flydubai & Air Arabia

Cabin suitcase and a smaller personal bag prepared for a UAE flight
There is no single cabin luggage size that automatically works on every UAE airline. Emirates, Etihad, flydubai and Air Arabia publish different dimensions, and their rules for a separate handbag or laptop bag are not identical.

Use the comparison below to check your main cabin bag, personal item and packed weight. Then confirm the allowance attached to your booking before travelling.

UAE Cabin Baggage Allowance: Quick Comparison

The table below focuses on standard adult Economy travel. Route exceptions, other travel classes and special allowances are discussed separately. Main-bag dimensions are shown as height × width × depth.

Published Economy cabin baggage limits
Airline Main Cabin Bag: Maximum Dimensions Main Allowance Personal Item
Emirates 55 × 38 × 22 cm 1 piece, up to 7 kg No separate everyday personal-bag allowance is listed for standard Economy.
Etihad Airways 56 × 36 × 23 cm 1 bag, up to 7 kg The referenced Economy policy lists one cabin bag, not an additional personal-bag allowance.
flydubai 55 × 38 × 20 cm 1 cabin bag; 7 kg hand-baggage allowance One small personal item, up to 25 × 33 × 20 cm, within the hand-baggage allowance.
Air Arabia 55 × 40 × 20 cm 1 cabin bag, up to 7 kg One personal item, up to 25 × 33 × 20 cm and 3 kg; combined total up to 10 kg.

Personal-item dimensions are reproduced in the order published by the airlines. They describe a smaller bag, not a second full-size cabin suitcase.

Can You Take a Cabin Suitcase and a Handbag?

Do not assume that every ticket includes both. A small bag fitting under a seat does not, by itself, create an extra baggage entitlement.

Emirates: plan around the one-piece Economy allowance

For an ordinary handbag or laptop bag, plan to fit it inside your permitted cabin piece unless Emirates confirms an applicable exception. Special allowances should be checked separately.

Etihad: do not apply premium-cabin allowances to Economy

Economy lists one cabin bag. The additional smaller bag described for Business, First and The Residence should not be assumed to apply to Economy.

flydubai: a personal item is not extra weight allowance

The permitted personal item must fit under the seat and remain within the hand-baggage allowance. Do not add an assumed extra 3 kg.

Air Arabia: 7 kg plus 3 kg is not one 10 kg suitcase

The allowance is split between the main cabin bag and a smaller personal item. Duty-free purchases must also remain within the combined limit. Follow any check-in declaration or tagging requirements.

Air Arabia cabin allowance split between a 7 kg main bag and a 3 kg personal item

Air Arabia’s combined allowance is split between two permitted items, not one 10 kg suitcase.

What Size Could Fit Within All Four Published Limits?

If you regularly use all four airlines, compare the smallest permitted measurement in each direction.

55 × 36 × 20 cm falls within the main-bag dimension limits listed in the table above.

This is a calculated common size envelope: 55 cm height, 36 cm width and 20 cm depth. It is not an official “UAE cabin standard”, and it does not guarantee that a particular bag will be accepted.

You must still check packed weight, number of pieces, your itinerary and the bag’s complete external measurements. Avoid treating an exact-limit measurement as a reason to ignore protruding handles or bulging pockets.

Compare all three dimensions individually. Being below a total centimetre figure does not cancel a separate width or depth restriction.

A Real Example: Why 55 × 40 × 20 cm Is Not Universal

The American Tourister Aerojoy 55cm is listed at 55 × 40 × 20 cm, with an empty weight of 2.6 kg.

These figures are published by American Tourister UAE. Here is a dimensions-only comparison with the limits above:

Comparing the published Aerojoy measurements
Airline Dimensions-Only Result Reason
Emirates Exceeds the published width 40 cm versus a 38 cm limit.
Etihad Exceeds the published width 40 cm versus a 36 cm limit.
flydubai Exceeds the published width 40 cm versus a 38 cm limit.
Air Arabia Within the published dimensions Matches the 55 × 40 × 20 cm maximum.

This is a comparison of published specifications, not a physical airline-sizer test or an airline approval. Check the actual packed product and current travel conditions.

Empty suitcase weight uses part of your allowance

The Aerojoy’s published width shows why a cabin-size label alone does not establish airline compatibility.

For a 7 kg main-bag limit, a 2.6 kg empty case leaves approximately 4.4 kg for its contents and any added accessories. This is simple subtraction, not a separate packing entitlement.

Where a personal item shares the same weight allowance, its weight must also be accounted for.

How to Check Your Cabin Bag Before Flying

  1. Pack it first. Include the items and exterior pockets you expect to carry.
  2. Retract the trolley handle. Measure the full bag, including wheels, fixed handles and other protruding parts.
  3. Check height, width and depth separately. Recheck depth if you use an expansion section.
  4. Weigh the complete packed bag. Apply any shared personal-item allowance correctly.

A “20-inch” or “cabin” label is not a substitute for these checks. See our Cabin Luggage Size Guide for more on measurement and retail size labels.

What About Other Classes, Routes and Connecting Flights?

The Economy comparison is a starting point, not a complete description of every ticket.

Open the premium-cabin and route notes

Emirates: Premium Economy permits one piece up to 10 kg at 55 × 38 × 22 cm. Business and First permit a briefcase plus a handbag or garment bag, up to 7 kg each. The briefcase limit is 45 × 35 × 20 cm; the handbag limit is 55 × 38 × 22 cm; a folded garment bag may be up to 20 cm thick.

Emirates also publishes route exceptions, including departures from Brazil and boarding in India. Check those conditions on the official page for your itinerary.

Etihad: Business, First and The Residence generally permit two cabin bags totalling up to 12 kg; for travel to or from the U.S., the published rule is one bag up to 12 kg. Each must stay within 56 × 36 × 23 cm. An additional smaller bag may weigh up to 5 kg and measure up to 23 × 39 × 19 cm.

flydubai: Business permits two main cabin bags totalling up to 14 kg, with a maximum of 7 kg per piece and 55 × 38 × 20 cm per bag.

For connecting or codeshare flights: check the baggage conditions shown for each segment and the airline actually operating it. Do not assume that the airline name on the booking gives every flight the same cabin allowance.

Infant items, medical equipment and assistance-related allowances need their own checks. Contact the airline when these apply.

What Happens If Your Bag Is Too Big or Too Heavy?

You may need to repack, check the bag into the hold or pay applicable charges. Do not build your packing plan around an assumed tolerance for an extra centimetre or kilogram.

Even a bag within published limits can sometimes be moved to the hold because cabin storage is full. Keep essential documents and valuables accessible.

If your bag is being checked: remove power banks and spare lithium batteries for carriage in the cabin, following the airline’s current restrictions. Dimensions do not determine whether every item inside a bag is permitted.

Also check liquids, prohibited items and any rules affecting your return flight. Airport purchases should not be treated as automatically exempt from baggage conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 7 kg limit include the suitcase?

Yes. Weigh the packed bag, not just its contents. The empty case and any accessories attached to it contribute to the total.

Is a 55 × 40 × 23 cm suitcase suitable for all four airlines?

No. That size exceeds at least one of the published dimensions for each airline in the Economy comparison. Check width and depth as carefully as height.

Can I carry one 10 kg suitcase on Air Arabia?

Not under the published 7 kg main-bag plus 3 kg personal-item arrangement. The combined allowance does not remove the separate limit for each bag.

Is a backpack automatically a personal item?

No. A backpack must meet the relevant personal-item dimensions and weight conditions, and your ticket must permit that additional item.

Does an expandable suitcase remain cabin size when expanded?

Not necessarily. Expansion increases external depth. Compare the packed, expanded measurements with the airline limit before using that extra space.
