Zipperless vs Zipper Luggage: Which Should You Choose?

Yellow Eminent Vertica and black American Tourister Technum suitcases side by side against a blue background

Choosing between zipperless vs zipper luggage comes down to how you pack and the design of the suitcase itself. A zipperless case uses latches or a frame closure around its main opening. A zippered case uses a zipper and may also offer a separate expansion feature. Neither design is automatically lighter, more secure or more durable.

Start with the space and weight you need, then compare how each model closes, locks and can be serviced. This guide explains the trade-offs, uses two SHONATI product examples and gives you a practical checklist for choosing.

Zipperless vs Zipper Luggage at a Glance

Compare the complete suitcase, not just its closure.
What matters to you? Zipperless luggage Zipper luggage
Closing the case The edges must align so the latches or closure points engage correctly. A slider joins the zipper around the opening; fabric must stay clear of its path.
Extra packing room Check the exact model. The frame alone does not establish whether it expands. Some models have a separate expansion system; a main zipper alone does not mean the case is expandable.
Security Removes the main opening zipper, but the latches, locks, hinges and shell still matter. Zipper construction, attachment and locking arrangements vary between models.
Empty weight Check the published weight for the exact size and model. Check the published weight for the exact size and model.
Repairs Ask about replacement latches, locks, hinges and frame-related repairs. Ask about sliders, pullers, zipper tracks and the integrated lock.

How Does Zipperless Luggage Work?

Zipperless luggage replaces the zipper around the main opening with latches or a frame closure. You bring the two sides together and secure the closure points. The number and arrangement of those points depend on the model.

Zipperless does not mean there are no zippers anywhere. Interior dividers, mesh pockets or accessory compartments may still use them.

A zipperless suitcase does not have to be aluminium

The shell material and the closure are separate features. For example, Eminent’s Vertica uses a polypropylene shell with a three-point zipperless closure. Do not assume a suitcase has an aluminium body simply because it closes with latches.

If you are also comparing shell materials, read our polycarbonate vs ABS vs polypropylene luggage guide.

Packing: Do You Need Fixed Space or Optional Expansion?

Before comparing closures, think about your return journey. Will your packing list stay roughly the same, or do you usually bring home extra clothing, gifts or shopping?

When a zipperless case may suit you

A fixed-capacity zipperless model can suit a predictable packing list when you like its closure and your belongings fit comfortably. Before fastening it, check that clothing and straps are clear of the edges and that both sides meet properly.

If the case will not close normally, rearrange or remove items. Forcing the latches is not a substitute for choosing enough space.

When an expandable zippered case may suit you

If occasional extra room is important, compare models with a documented expansion feature. The expansion zipper serves a different purpose from the main opening zipper: it releases an additional section of packing space.

Expansion also changes the outside dimensions. It does not increase your airline’s weight allowance. Our guide to whether expandable luggage is worth it explains when that extra room is useful.

Check how the suitcase opens, too

Closure type does not tell you how the interior is divided or how much room the open case needs. Open the actual model and consider whether its layout will work on a luggage rack, bed or hotel-room floor.

Is Zipperless Luggage More Secure?

A zipperless case removes the main opening zipper from the design. That is a construction difference, not proof that the whole suitcase is theft-proof. Security also depends on the locks, latches, hinges, shell and how the case is used.

Zippered luggage is not one uniform category either. Zippers differ in construction and design, so a broad claim that all zippered suitcases offer the same protection is unhelpful.

TSA-compatible locks are available on both types

A TSA-compatible lock is not exclusive to zipperless luggage. Travel Sentry systems are used with different lock formats, including zipper locks and latch locks.

These systems allow participating security authorities to open and relock compatible locks during inspection. They do not guarantee protection against theft. Travel Sentry explicitly notes that no travel lock can provide complete protection against a determined thief.

What to check: how the exact suitcase locks, whether every closure point engages properly and whether you can operate the mechanism comfortably.

Which Type Is Lighter?

There is no reliable answer based on the closure alone. Shell material, size, frame, wheels, handles and interior fittings all contribute to empty weight.

Compare the same luggage class and similar packing capacity. Two suitcases labelled “medium” or measuring the same height may still have different widths, depths and interiors.

For a flight with a fixed baggage allowance, the empty suitcase is part of the total:

Permitted total weight − empty suitcase weight = remaining weight for contents.

Use your actual ticket allowance for that calculation. For cabin travel, check both weight and external dimensions against the relevant airline’s cabin baggage requirements.

Durability and Repairs: Compare the Parts and the Service

Neither closure removes every possible point of failure. On a zippered case, the slider, puller, zipper track or surrounding attachment may need attention. On a zipperless case, the latches, locks, hinges or frame alignment may need attention.

The useful buying question is not simply “Which lasts longer?” It is: “What support is available for this exact model if something stops working?”

  • Ask whether relevant replacement parts can be obtained.
  • Check who handles warranty claims and repairs in the UAE.
  • Read the applicable coverage and exclusions.
  • Keep the purchase receipt and product identification details.

A service arrangement described on an overseas website does not automatically establish the same arrangement locally. Confirm the support attached to the product you are buying.

Two SHONATI Product Examples: What the Specifications Show

The Eminent Vertica Medium and American Tourister Technum 68cm illustrate two different approaches. They are not identical products with only the closure changed.

Published specifications reviewed on 14 October 2026. This is a specification comparison, not a physical packing or security test.
Feature Eminent Vertica Medium American Tourister Technum 68cm
Product page View Eminent Vertica Medium View American Tourister Technum 68cm
Main closure Zipperless three-point frame closure Zippered closure with DuoSaf™ Security Zipper
Shell material Polypropylene Polycarbonate
Published empty weight 4.5 kg 3.6 kg
Closed external dimensions 68 × 47 × 27 cm 68 × 46 × 27 cm
Published capacity 84 litres 73 litres; 84.5 litres expanded
Expansion Non-expandable Depth increases from 27 cm to 32 cm

Vertica figures were checked against Eminent’s official Medium Grey/Pink specifications. Technum figures are taken from the linked SHONATI product listing.

In these listings, Technum is 0.9 kg lighter, while Vertica has the greater stated capacity before Technum is expanded. That does not prove zippered cases are always lighter or zipperless cases always hold more. These models also differ in material and construction.

Published litre figures are not a like-for-like packing test.

Six Checks Before You Choose

  1. Start with your normal packing list. Choose enough usable room without relying on force to close the case.
  2. Compare empty weights. Use the exact model and size, not an assumption about its closure.
  3. Operate the main closure. Check that latches engage correctly or the zipper moves smoothly, with lining and straps clear of the opening.
  4. Check the lock instructions. Make sure you understand how to set, open and relock the mechanism.
  5. Open the suitcase fully. Look at the compartment layout, access and space needed to use it.
  6. Confirm after-sales support. Ask about warranty terms, repair arrangements and parts for that model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is zipperless luggage better than zippered luggage?

It depends on the models and your priorities. A zipperless case may appeal if you prefer a latch closure and its fixed capacity suits your packing. An expandable zippered model may suit you if optional extra room matters. Compare weight, layout, locks and service support before choosing.

Does zipperless mean the suitcase has no internal zippers?

No. The term normally describes the main opening. Internal pockets and dividers may still use zippers.

Is every zippered suitcase expandable?

No. A main opening zipper does not establish that the case expands. Look for a separate expansion feature in the exact model’s specifications.

Are zipperless suitcases waterproof?

Do not assume so. A frame closure alone does not establish a waterproof rating. Only rely on water-resistance or waterproof claims documented for the specific product.

Can a zipperless suitcase be used as cabin luggage?

A suitable cabin-size model may be accepted, but its closure does not determine eligibility. Check its external dimensions and packed weight against your airline and ticket requirements. The two 68cm examples in this article are check-in cases.

What should I do if the zipper or latch becomes difficult to close?

Check for trapped lining, straps or contents and make sure the case is not overpacked. Avoid forcing the mechanism. If the problem continues, follow the manufacturer’s instructions or contact the retailer or authorised service provider.

Choose the Case That Works for Your Packing

Choose a zipperless model when you prefer its closure, your belongings fit comfortably and its weight and service arrangements suit you. Choose a zippered model when its overall design works better for your trips, including any verified expansion feature you need.

At SHONATI, we can help you compare suitcase sizes, closure mechanisms and product weights. Start with the linked models above and contact our team to confirm the size, colour and availability you want before visiting.
